EBIS AGM 22/04/2020

- March 24th 2020
  • Following the advice on the WHO and Government websites, by preventing a large group of people gathering together and maintaining social distancing, the EBIS AGM which was scheduled for April has been postponed for the time being, with a tentative plan to hold the AGM in June. Though the date isn’t fixed as yet, the EBIS board of directors will continue to monitor advice given and notify its members when the next AGM date is fixed.

Advice to Members and the Barge Industry

- March 17th 2020
  • We would suggest to the barge industry and our members, that whilst an EBIS inspection has a validity of 12 months, it would be prudent at this time and with the uncertainty in this rapidly changing environment, to organize the inspection of their barges at an earlier date to ensure that there is sufficient time to rebook an inspection if one fails, due to an inspector being ill or unavailable in one location. This should allow sufficient time to reschedule another inspection before the old EBIS inspection expires.

If the barge owner is unable to organize a timely conducted inspection in this difficult times and has documented evidence that they have tried to obtain an inspection in a reasonable time frame and reasonable location, EBIS would encourage its members to take a pragmatic approach to the inspection validity in this rapidly changing environment.

EBIS position in vue of the Corona virus

- March 13th 2020
  • Dear EBIS Members, Inspectors and the Inland shipping Industry,

As we have all seen in the last few days, the situation with CORVID-19 or Corona virus is changing rapidly. The EBIS board continues to monitor the advice from governments across the A.R.A region. Whilst different governments have given different advice to their citizens. The EBIS board’s primary concern is for the safety of people and as such, all EBIS refresher training has been cancelled for the time being. The situation will be reviewed on a regular basis and as soon as it is safe to carry out the training, further training will be undertaken.

There is no intention to suspend barge inspections at the moment, however this is under constant review. The EBIS board deems that one inspector boarding a barge does not exceed the advice given by Governments at the moment, regarding large scale meetings and crowds.

The EBIS board is asking all Inspectors to follow Public Health recommendations in their countries and to stay at home if they have a cold, a cough, a sore throat or a fever and avoid contact with others, practice (social distancing).

We would like to remind everyone how to help stop the spread of this virus.

    • wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds
    • always wash your hands when you get home or into work
    • use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available
    • cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze
    • put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands afterwards
    • try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell.
    • do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean

EBIS position in vue of the Corona virus

- March 4th 2020
  • As a result of the outbreak of the Corona virus many countries are providing their citizens with health and travel advice reflecting that available from the World Health Organisation. WHO.
That advice continues to develop alongside the situation, with governments issuing advice ranging from suspending all travel to enforcing a quarantine period on those travellers who may have visited affected areas.
This has added a further layer of complexity to the management of EBIS Inspector and refresher courses. At this moment in time, all planned refresher courses will take place as announced.
EBIS will of course keep the situation under review and provide updates as they develop and in line with Guidance issued by WHO.
Please do not hesitate to contact EBIS Management if you have any questions.
If you have just returned from a high risk country or you are showing symptoms of the virus, please contact your local medical providers and follow WHO guidance before considering attending a course.
